Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are critical to helping our Central students thrive and grow. Whether you are interested in spending an hour in the classroom, helping with a special event, taking on a weekly recurring role or stepping up to chair a committee - there is a volunteer opportunity that can work for everyone. Several volunteer roles are detailed below, and we invite you to explore this section of the website. If you find something you'd like to learn more about, or if you just want to hear about various volunteer opportunities, then fill out Central's Volunteer Opportunities form. A PTA Board Member or Committee Chair will get in touch with you with more information. Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Central! (Note: check here to review the required district clearances for volunteering.)

2019 -2020 Volunteers Needed!

Lunch Time Parent Helpers
We need parents to help on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 12:00 - 12:45, assisting with the lunch distribution process. Each volunteer shift earns you one free lunch for your child, via a credit that lets you order when you're ready to use it. Please sign up here if you are available to help with this program. Thank you!

Weekly Opportunities

Green Team

Come spend lunch time with the kids at Central, and help an enthusiastic team of students manage the compost, recycling and trash collection for that day. Ideal commitment is one day per week, during lunch. (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday)

Classroom Music (grades K-3)
Vocal music instruction is provided in all Central 1st-3rd grade classrooms, with the help of dedicated parents. No formal musical training required - just a love of music and singing! Sign up to help the kids in your child's grade learn the basics of vocal music and music theory, as well as recorders in the 3rd grade. Come have fun and share your love of music with your child and their classmates!

Walking Track

Fridays at lunch time, Central kids have the opportunity to participate in Walking Track, earning points and prizes throughout the year as they walk their way to fitness and fun! Come help supervise and coordinate the activities, and cheer the walkers on!

Yard Duty

We are always in need of volunteers to help supervise the playground at recess time. This is a flexible position, but ideally you are able to commit to a particular recess each week.

Classroom Volunteering

Check with your child's teacher to see what volunteer opportunities are available in the classroom; then visit the Central Volunteer Requirements page to make sure that you are ready to come to school and lend a hand.

Monthly Opportunities

Room Parents

Room Parents are an important link between PTA and classroom parents. In addition to forwarding PTA-related emails to their child's class parents, they are also responsible for coordinating parents around teacher gifts throughout the year, and helping the teacher organize volunteers for classroom parties and activities.

Art in Action

Art in Action is Central's SchoolForce-supported, parent-led art program. SchoolForce purchases the curriculum and training, but PTA organizes parent volunteers both to docent the monthly lessons (training provided) and to assist the docents. Docents should be able to commit to teaching several lessons per year; assistants can help with one or all of the monthly lessons. More information and details are on the Art in Action page

Walking Wednesdays

Central students are encouraged to walk safely to school, and especially on Wednesdays! Wednesday mornings, volunteer parents (often working with their kids!) hand out stickers or tokens to kids walking onto campus. You don't need to be available every Wednesday; ideally you can help out at least one Wednesday morning per month. The time commitment is just 8am-8:30am so perfect if you have to get in to the office!

(Note: BookNook will only be open if we can find a new chair! Consider volunteering to lead it!) BookNook is a quiet place for kids to read and play games during recess on the weeks when the librarian isn't at school and so the library would not otherwise be open (generally every other week). Time commitment is ideally at least one recess, twice a month (for example, Monday mornings on the two weeks the library is closed).

Fifth Grade Opportunities

Fifth graders have special activities that require parent volunteers to help produce; the Fifth Grade Talent Showcase and of course ... Fifth Grade Promotion! Fifth grade parents are also encouraged to join their kids and help with Kiddie Valet.

Special Events - Once-A-Year

Dolphin Dash

This year's annual Fun Run is October 21st 2018 and includes a pancake breakfast for over 700 people and carnival with games for the whole family! The Dolphin Dash team is always looking for people to help serve food, set up the race course, run game booths and more. It's a great volunteer option that only requires one afternoon of your time, but lets you see the entire Central community out having fun!

Book Fair

This year's book fair will be in November. Hours are varied and there's lots to do: it's a great opportunity to come to campus and lend a hand, whether you're staffing the fair or helping with set-up or breakdown of the event. If you have limited time throughout the year but love to read, or if you want to see what's new in the world of kid's books, this is a great option.

Holiday Craft Fair

(Event TBD pending a new chair.)

Spring Family Fun Event

Central families will have the opportunity to enjoy a picnic and movie-night on campus! A one-time event where you can help with organization, set up, or clean up; this event takes place in the spring, the exact date is still to be determined.

Discovery Day

"The best day of the year!" Every June, over 150 volunteers help turn our Central campus into an amazing world of discovery; with 35 sessions ranging from ice cream making to frog dissection (and just about everything in between!) there is something for everyone at Discovery Day. We encourage new Central families to help out with the special Kindergarten version of the day, or to try assisting with a long-standing favorite session. New session ideas and additional session leaders are always needed, so this is a great way to spend a day flexing your creative muscles and helping the kids discover something new.

SchoolForce Opportunities

SchoolForce has need for Central volunteers to help at their annual Save the Music! festival each October in Twin Pines Park, at their spring auction and fundraiser, and at a Central-campus level to help with Reading Power in January. More information can be found on our SchoolForce page, or contact the Central SchoolForce Chair to find out more about these opportunities!

We Are Looking for Committee Chairs

We are looking for a new PTA Hospitality Chair, to provide refreshments at our five annual PTA Association meetings as well as select other PTA events. If you think this might be an opportunity for you, contact the PTA President

We are looking for a co-chair for this year's SchoolForce Readathon, to help organize and run the annual event alongside the current chair for this school year, and then to take over the event for the following year. If you think this might be an opportunity for you, contact the PTA President
