Volunteer with Art in Action!

Central Elementary uses The Art in Action (AiA) Program,a high quality, comprehensive K–8 visual art curriculum. This program is run entirely by parent docents (teachers) and assistants. This is a great way to work in your child's classroom on a regular or once-in-awhile schedule. The kids always look forward to Art in Action lessons and we have a strong network of parent volunteers. Every docent receives free training and access to online resources for each lesson. Our PTA provides the funding for this program and all of the art supplies used for each class. If you are interested in volunteering please contact our Art in Action coordinators.

Docents vs. Assistants

Our Art in Action Program is lead by parent volunteers. As a volunteer you will be either a Docent or Assistant. Docents lead lessons from prep to clean-up.


Docents are required to attend a training at the Art in Action office in Menlo Park for the grade level(s) they will teach. These training sessions are also available online if you can't attend, however getting hands-on training is a lot of fun and you have the opportunity to learn from other docents. You do not have to lead every lesson, if several of the parents in your group attended training you can decide which lessons you would like to teach and the other docents can assist. Being a docent means you will prep materials, lead the lesson and let assistants know how they can help. Please connect with your Classroom Lead to sign up.


Assistants are not required to attend training, but it is encouraged. Having several assistants at each lesson helps the lesson go more smoothly and makes set up and clean up much easier. The more assistants we have the easier the workload is! Assistants can sign up for one lesson or every lesson, please connect with your Classroom Lead to sign up.


Classroom Lead The Classroom Lead is a Docent or an Assistant who organizes the lesson dates for their class. This person will meet with the teacher at the beginning of the year to schedule the lessons and check in as needed to reschedule or check progress. The Classroom Lead will also create a sign-up for their team members to lead and assist classes, as well as send out reminders when the lessons are coming up. The Classroom Lead is responsible for alerting their team about meetings and important dates as well as helping find substitute docents as needed. Every class needs a Classroom Lead. Please contact the Art in Action team to be listed as a Classroom Lead.


Curator- Our curator is responsible for labeling, displaying and removing art for the monthly grade level art shows at the Belmont library. The Curator is also responsible for emailing teachers to let their students know that their artwork has been selected for the show. This is a great position for someone who wants to work on their own.
